IEEE website for the July 11th, 2002 TELSTAR Andover, ME Milestone Plaque Dedication

This is the IEEE website for the July 11th, 2002 TELSTAR Andover, ME Milestone Plaque Dedication in the Andover Town Common

Until recently there was a visitor's centre at Goonhilly in Cornwall, where the signals were sent and received using Goonhilly 1 – “Arthur”. It's still in use, though it's been given a replacement skin. The nearby petrol station is called Telstar (a nice thing to see on your bank statement if you paid by card). The Visitor Centre will apparently re-open at some point:

I've been there a couple of times in the past and look forward to taking the family there when it re-opens. My wife however seems slightly less excited.

TELSTAR ANNIVERSARY

Veteran broadcaster Robert Trout remembers 35 years ago today when TELSTAR, the world's first communication satellite was used. Before TELSTAR the only radio link between the continents was short-wave. With TELSTAR, for 18 minutes every two and half hours.

Remember the song TELSTAR? LISTEN TO IT ON NPR!

There is also A new book out on Joe Meek also.
