Burroughs B-200
SECTION 2.
SYSTEM AND COMPONENT
DESCRIPTION
GENERAL
The B 200 Series Systems use three types
of components: input units, central processors and output units. A basic
system will include a central processor and a minimum of one input and one
output unit. Systems can be expanded at the installation site to include
multiple input/output units.
Combining a central processor with
specific input/ output units, results in four application oriented
systems. Each is described below.
SYSTEM DESIGN B 250 System
This system combines punched card and
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) document processing, providing
punched card and printed (continuous form or unit record) output. Ledger
cards, such as those used in inventory applications, can be processed and
updated, providing visual account histories on the records which can be
accepted as direct computer input. The components which can be used in the
B 250 System are noted below:
B 250 System
Central Processor
Sorter- Reader
Card Reader
Card Punch
Ledger Processor
Line Printer or Multiple Tape Lister (l or 2)

B 260 System
The B 260 System (Figure 2-2) features
high-speed processing of punched cards. This system is capable of reading
up to 1600 cards per minute, punching 300 cards per minute and printing
700 lines per minute. B 260 System components are shown below:
B 260 System
Central Processor
Card Reader (l or 2)
Card Punch
Line Printer
or
Multiple Tape Lister (l or 2)
B 270 System
This system (Figure 2-3) is designed as
a highspeed punch card/magnetic tape processor with additional components
available for processing proof-transit operations in banking institutions.
As
a financial system it features the
processing of MICR checks and deposits at speeds up to 1560 per minute
with optional simultaneous conversion to magnetic tape, cash letter
distribution and individual listings for each cash letter. As a general
purpose system it includes all punched card and line printing capabilities
of the B 260 System with magnetic tape processing. The components which
can be used in the B 270 System are:

We Have two copies of employment
applications Form ED 1033 Would date this in the late 1950's as it
refers to 1960 in a future sense in the text which is reprinted below.
(Editors note: We were always taught to take
three applications when we were filling them out, perhaps we can assume
Jack got the first one right and the other 2 copies went into his file
cabinet)
