CBS-WCBW TELEVISION TEST PATTERN TRANSMITTED FOUR TIMES A WEEK
Coincidental with CBS television station WCBW-N.Y. going on a
three-programs-a-week schedule, its test pattern transmissions have been
increased to four a week, making a total of three and a half testing hours
on the air.
The new test pattern schedule is: Fridays, 3:00 to 5:00 PM, EWT;
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 7:30 to 8:00 PM, EWT.
Until May 1, the WCBW test pattern schedule was Thursdays from
2:00 to 4:00 PM, EWT, only, at which time it was the only pattern on the
air. CBS and NBC have an agreemment to transmit their patterns
simultaneously in the Friday time, and Dumont is expected to join in the
operation shortly.
P. A. Goetz, Coordinating Supervisor of CBS Television Engine81ring
Operations, pointed out that simultaneous transmission of test patterns
makes it possible for a television service man to make one call and adjust
a receiver satisfactorily for all stations operating. Discussing the value
of the test pattern to set owner's, he said:
"It establishes first, of course, whether the receiver is working.
It is helpful in orienting the antenna for minimum reflections. It also makes
possible adjusting the size of the image) centering, linearity and,
finally, focus."

CBS TELEVISION STATION WCBW-N.Y. AUGMENTS ITS FACILITIES WITH ANOTHER
FLOOR IN GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL
CBS television station WCBW-New York, has added 3,000 square feet of
floor space and is making extensive alterations of its premises in the
Grand Central Terminal to permit expansion of operations. The augmented
quarters will give the video station a total of 25,000 square feet for
offices, studios, workshops and storage.
Present operations of WCBW are confined to the third floor. The
additional space comprises two separate sections of the second floor. One
section will be used for television activities of the CBS Research
Department and as a "viewing room," accommodating 20 persons.
The other section will be devoted to a carpentry shop.
The third floor is being altered and modernized. The room for scenery
designing is being enlarged, and additional storage space for props is
also being provided. On the balcony of the third floor, rooms used for
storage will be converted into additional offices and the storage material
moved to a warehouse.
A second "viewing room," also seating 20 person will be built
on this floor for the use of visitors. The new "view1ing rooms"
will bring to five the number of television receivers at WCBW. They are to
be installed by Phil Goetz, supervising engineer of Technical Operations
for CBS Television, and fed by antenna from atop the Grand Central
Terminal Building and directly from the control room via a video
transmission line.
