VTR manufactured by Sony. The 3/4" U-matic Portable decks that
followed handled color work in a much more elegant and simplistic method.
The AVC-3400 and AVC-3450 were the monochrome cameras used with the AV-8400 Portapak. We are researching which color camera would have been used . The Sony AV-8400 was a color recorder - if the color module was installed in it, however, the recorder would only playback in monochrome. You could utilize the external color playback adaptor (a unit almost as large as the recorder) This Portapak was the first, and only, auto threading recorder which had special tapes with a stiff plastic leader tape at the start of the spool. Optional accessories were C-1000 AC/Color adapter unit, CLP-8000 color playback adapter, CLP-8000R color record adapter.

| The AV-8400 Videorover® is the most
advanced of Sony's 1/2 inch
portable VTR's. Using second generation electronics plus a dropout
compensator and a built-in sync generator, stability of picture is
achieved in recording and playback. Videotape recorded on the A V-8400 can
be copied and edited without the breakup, picture roll and interference
that generally affect tape transfers from less sophisticated systems. It
can be a source machine for the A V-8650 Videocorder® for a complete
editing facility, thus actually lowering system cost.
The A V-8400 records NTSC color signals, and conforms to basic EIAJ-Type 1 monochrome and color standards. It will record 300 lines in black & white and 240 lines in color.Other features adding to the convenience and ease of operation of this latest generation of portapak include: Automatic threading V-35 reel loads 20 minutes of tape simply by sliding open the plastic access door and dropping the reel on the spindle. (A full 30 minute standard reel can be manually loaded.) An end-of-tape shut off preserves battery life, which can be readily checked on the battery level meter. The unit can be powered by easily rechargeable internal batteries, standard AC current or from an automobile battery. A three digit counter indicates recording time in minutes. Still picture capability in playback aids editing. Most important, the AV-8400 is designed to grow with your VTR needs and requirements in either of two configurations, the AV-8400B/W for black & white, and the AV-8400C for color use. The A V-8400B/W is the basic system, and can be paired with the A VC-3400 camera as a self-contained black & white production unit. When you're ready for color, adding the CLP-8000M converts the AV-8400B/W into a full NTSC color record and playback system. If your color needs are immediate, the A V-8400 can be purchased color ready as the A V-8400Cwith the CLP-8000M included. The CLP-8000M designation encompasses separate modules for record (the CLP-8000R) and playback (the CLP-8000). The CLP-8000R record module fits directly into the A V-8400C recorder to provide a light weight recording system. No extra color unit is required to record. The playback of color is accomplished with the AC-1000 power adaptor fitted with the CLP-8000 playback module. The AC-1 000 also houses a color RF unit that permits playback through any ordinary color TV receiver.
